MJFANS234: MATCHUPS I LIKE
I was inspired to do this by Bang’s DC vs Non-Marvel Matchup Showcase Blog, where he showcased some of his favorite DC matchups. I want to do that too, but instead of focusing on one specific franchise, I want to focus on my favorite matchups in general. I won’t go over every matchup I like, just some I recently came to really like, ones I’ve put out before but needed a bit more explanation to make sense, and some I really like to talk about again.
Toph vs Mirko
(All the TN’S are mine BTW)
Connections
Both are famous female fighters who built their reputations through underground combat circuits before becoming recognized heroes/public figures (Toph was the undefeated "Blind Bandit" of the Earth Rumble tournaments, while Mirko became infamous for crashing and participating in illegal fight clubs as "Bunny-Eared Usako"). Both are considered to be among the strongest heroes of their respective generations and are known for overwhelming opponents through sheer aggression and skill rather than overcomplicated strategies or planning.
Both developed their abilities largely through personal experience and combat rather than relying on traditional instruction or authority figures (Toph's earthbending style came from learning from badgermoles, while Mirko forged her reputation through constant fighting and self-reliance). Both reject being treated as weak because of traits others see as limitations (For example, Toph did get into fights and arguments; in some ways, she wasn't a helpless blind girl, while Mirko refuses to join a hero team, seeing it as cowardly, as they could just be relying on their teammates' strength rather than their own). Both possess animal-themed abilities tied directly to how they fight (Toph learned from badgermoles and fights with a grounded, instinctive style, while Mirko's Rabbit Quirk gives her rabbit-like senses, speed, and kicking power).
Both are incredibly independent and dislike being controlled by others. Both have abrasive, blunt personalities that can initially come across as rude, but are ultimately motivated by a desire to help people. Both rebelled against societal expectations placed upon them (Toph was expected to be a proper, sheltered noblewoman, while Mirko ignored expectations of what a hero should act like and carved her own path).
Both specialize in close-range combat despite possessing abilities that could be used more defensively (While Toph can do long range, she is known for and enjoys fighting up close, and can use the earth to make armor and weapons to assist in this, while Mirko's whole fighting style is built around close-range combat). Both eventually become symbols of strength who inspire later generations (Toph creating metalbending and leading the police force, while Mirko became one of Japan's top-ranked heroes).
Why I like it
What I like most about this matchup is two things: the banter and the fight potential (duh). Toph and Mirko have very explosive personalities, especially in combat, and seeing them bounce (no pun intended) back and forth would be really fun to watch. Plus, the fight potential would make it fun to watch Mirko smash through tons of earth, and see the many things Toph can do with it. It doesn’t have to be a long ranged vs close ranged fight, since Toph can and has enjoyed fights where she is throwing hands and donning earth armor. With Avatar’s martial arts-based combat on top of that, I think we’ve got a pretty good fight here.
Alts
The only two matchups for Toph that I know of are Terra (2003) and a Gaara runback. The latter doesn't really interest me. I get why people want it—Gaara was robbed—but instead of just feeding Toph to Gaara, I'd rather see him get a completely new episode that does him justice. Toph vs. Terra works, and it's basically an Avatar fight, but I personally prefer a matchup where Toph is fighting someone who doesn't use her own element. Furthermore, thematically, Toph and Terra are very different characters. That doesn't automatically hurt a matchup—even barebones connections can still lead to a good episode—but I want something different for Toph.
I know Mirko has Chun Li, but I’m not gonna lie, while good, I feel part of that is partially popular due to gooning ( I know because that was once me) ngl Wiz, but it is good, and could be fun.
Azula vs Dabi
Connections
Both Azula and Dabi are fire-wielding users from powerful families whose abusive upbringings shaped them into dangerous villains in their respective series (Azula was raised as Fire Lord Ozai's perfect heir, while Dabi/Toya Todoroki was molded by Endeavor's obsession with creating the ultimate hero) and have brothers with scars on their face due to a parent (Zuko and Shoto). Both possess a unique blue flame that sets them apart from nearly every other fire user in their worlds, showcasing their overwhelming power.
Both were affected by toxic family dynamics that catered around expectations, favoritism, and parental abuse, ultimately leading them both down a destructive path. However, they reacted to their abuse in opposite ways (Azula embraced her father's mindset and wanted to earn his approval through power and perfection, while Dabi ultimately rejected everything his father stood for and dedicated himself to destroying Endeavor's legacy and everything he loved). Both gradually end up destroying themselves through their obsessions, with Azula's pursuit of control through fear causing her mind to unravel while Dabi's pursuit of revenge literally burns apart his own body. Despite this, both remain determined until the very end, becoming tragic examples of how abuse and impossible expectations can consume and destroy a person's life.
Why I like it
I do not care if this is a stomp. I don't care if people call it "Zuko vs. Shoto 2" (it's really not, Zuko doesn't have lightning, Dabi doesn't have ice, and he uses his fire differently. On top of that, Azula brings lightning into the fight, giving the animation even more variety). It's peak. The animation potential is more than there, and honestly, I still feel robbed of a great episode with Zuko vs. Shoto. This could easily redeem that.
The biggest reason I like this matchup, though, is the contrast. Yes, there are similarities between them, but what really sells it for me is that they're essentially the inverse of their respective siblings. Let me explain. Dabi is like a version of Zuko who became evil, the eldest son who had all the expectations placed on him, only to be discarded in favor of the younger sibling with greater potential. Unlike Zuko, however, Dabi gave into his hatred and dedicated himself to revenge. Azula, meanwhile, is like Shoto in that she's the younger sibling with all the talent and power their father wanted, causing all of his ambitions and expectations to be placed onto her. Unlike Shoto, though, Azula embraces those expectations and desperately tries to become the perfect child, only to lose her sanity in the process. So, in a way, I guess it is evil Zuko vs. Shoto, just not in the way most people think.
Alts
The only one I can speak on with familiarity is Azula vs Tai-Lung, and yeah, that’s good, wouldn't mind it, it's my favorite Alt for Azula.
Michael Jackson vs Mario
(Okay here me out, it should be noted just like Weird Al, this is strictly looking at MJ’s fictional appearances)
Connections
Both are among the most recognizable and influential entertainment icons in history (music and video games) whose impact has transcended their original medium (movies, television, etc) and they would become worldwide cultural phenomena (Michael revolutionized music and live performance, and whose music videos transformed and saved the music industry, while Mario became the face of video games and helped revive the gaming industry after the 1983 crash). Both of their mediums bring joy, hope, and perseverance that have remained loved across three generations. Both are known for their upbeat, optimistic, compassionate personalities.
Both protect others from forces of darkness and tyranny (Michael in his appearances has fought the likes of thugs, gangs, mobbosses, robots, ghosts, and more, while Mario repeatedly risks his life to save the Mushroom Kingdom and those threatened by Bowser and other villains).
Both have versatile arsenals that combine acrobatic movement with a wide variety of unique abilities and power-ups (Michael incorporates dance, music, magical transformations, and supernatural techniques into combat, while Mario utilizes countless power-ups and combat styles across his adventures).
Both constantly reinvented themselves throughout their careers while maintaining the core qualities that made them iconic (Michael evolved musically and visually with nearly every video and appearance from The Thriller, to Space Adventure, and even a Giant Robot, while Mario successfully transitioned from arcade platformers into RPGs, sports, kart racing, party games, 3D adventures, and more). Both are remembered as pioneers who permanently changed their industries through innovation, creativity, and an unmatched level of quality.
Why I like it
Yeah, this is pretty weird, I'll admit it, but that's exactly why I like it. It's goofy, but I genuinely think it works. With all of Michael's various transformations and powers from his music videos, video games, films, and other media, I think he bounces off Mario really well. One thing I especially like is how naturally it complements Mario's goofy, almost Toon-like style. Not many Mario matchups really lean into that aspect of his character, but this one does. On top of that, I just think these two fit each other incredibly well from a cultural standpoint. They're two of the biggest entertainment icons ever of their respective mediums, and I think that alone gives the matchup a unique charm that makes it stand out.
I want to do a blog on this one day, I’ve already researched Michael, made a Character Blog on him, so the process would be smooth, just minor changes. Mario, I’ve never researched in a versus capacity, and I know I have controversial opinions of his verses standing just based on the things I’ve read, but that could change with a thorough look into his series.
Alts
Since the movie dropped, Mike’s got tons of ideas. I do think currently his most popular right now is Miku, but I also like Pepsi Man Scrooge McDuck as well. I also think Mickey could work, but Bugs is right there for Mickey. As for Mario, my current favorite alt for him is a Mario vs Sonic 3 runback, in fact I want that, but Mario vs Kirby is also cool, I think Mario vs Mickey is dope too.
Tsunade vs Ahsoka
Connections
Both are powerful female warriors who inherited a legacy of some of the greatest heroes of their worlds (Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage, student of the Third Hokage, and one of the Legendary Sannin, while Ahsoka was the apprentice of Anakin Skywalker, apart of Yoda’s lineage, and fought alongside the Jedi Order in the Clone Wars), who have had teammates/friends turn to evil due to fear of death (Orichimaru and Anakin).
Both carried huge expectations because of their mentors and family legacies, yet would forge identities that stood apart from them. Both experienced losses during a war that shattered their faith in the institutions they once believed in (Tsunade losing Dan and Nawaki during the Shinobi Wars, while Ahsoka lost faith in the Jedi Order after being falsely accused and witnessing its complacency during the Clone Wars).
Both walked away from the organizations that defined their lives (Tsunade abandoning the Hidden Leaf for years due to her trauma, while Ahsoka voluntarily left the Jedi Order), only to eventually return when they were needed most. Both became respected mentors to the next generation, including female apprentices (Tsunade trained Sakura, while Ahsoka mentored Sabine Wren and continued passing on the lessons Anakin taught here). Both are renowned for their exceptional combat prowess, and combining immense skill, experience, and tactical thinking with unique abilities (Tsunade's unparalleled medical ninjutsu and monstrous strength, alongside Ahsoka's agile dual-blade lightsaber combat and mastery of the Force).
Why I like it
This one's still pretty new to me, so I'm still figuring out exactly what I'd want to see from it, but I can already say I'd love to see how Tsunade's raw power would clash with Ahsoka's agility and skill. On top of that, both have really unique abilities that could play off each other well, like Tsunade's healing, Strength of a Hundred regeneration, and Sage techniques against Ahsoka's mastery of the Force. I also think it's a really thematic matchup, which only makes me more interested in seeing how it would play out.
Alts
I can't speak on Tsunade, but Ahsoka has quite a few like Psylocke, Boruto, and another one I created, Lady Nagant, I like them all.
Darth Vader vs Tomura Shigaraki
(Just gonna copy n paste my previous connections here)
Connections
Both of them began life as kind-hearted children with different names (Anakin Skywalker and Tenko Shimura) whose lives were altered by traumatic events in their childhood that destroyed their innocence (slavery and abuse). Both were manipulated by older mastermind mentor figures who saw their pain and molded it into a weapon (Emperor Palpatine and All For One). Because of this, both became convinced that embracing their hatred was the only way to escape their suffering, becoming the primary vessels of their masters' ambitions.
This transformation led to the abandonment of their original identities Anakin Skywalker was gone, replaced by Darth Vader, while Tenko Shimura buried that crying child beneath himself as the persona of Tomura Shigaraki was born, with both names being given to them by their masters. Both are the ultimate symbols of what happens when children in need are failed by the adults and societies that should have protected them. Both possess powers intrinsically linked to destruction, with Vader wielding the Force to crush, choke, and dominate his foes, while Shigaraki's Decay literally disintegrates everything he touches.
Both harbor an immense hatred for one man (Obi-Wan Kenobi and All Might) and seek not only their deaths but also the destruction of everything they built and held dear. Truthfully, both sought peace in their own twisted ways—Vader, even as Anakin, believed authoritarian control could end chaos and save people from dying, while Shigaraki wanted to destroy the society he believed created his suffering.
Their hatred comes from loss rather than pure evil, as Vader's fall was born from his fear of losing the people he loved, while Shigaraki's rage stemmed from the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father, the neglect of those around him, and the destruction of his family. Both symbolize the failures of their respective societies: the complacency and arrogance of the Jedi and the Republic's corruption in Vader's case, and the cracks and decay within hero society in Shigaraki's.
Their stories center heavily around identity, because beneath the monster and hatred each becomes, Anakin and Tenko continue to exist, creating constant internal conflict throughout their journeys. Both have complicated relationships with family, with Vader unknowingly hunting his own children before ultimately sacrificing himself to save his son, while Shigaraki is the grandson of Nana Shimura, making him the tragic consequence of her heroic legacy.
Both are dark reflections of their series' protagonists, as Vader contrasts with Luke as someone who gave in to fear instead of faith, while Shigaraki contrasts with Deku as someone who also suffered because of society but still chose to become a hero who uplifted others. Both are essentially at war between the person they once were and the monster their masters turned them into. In the end, both die with their true selves brought back to light and help the protagonists defeat their masters, though in different ways Vader dies repentant of his sins, while Shigaraki dies content, yet unrepentant in his ambition to destroy. Even after death, both continue to exist as spirits who watch over the lives of their heroic counterparts.
Why I like it
We move from the apprentice to the master. As for the fight itself, the choreography has a lot of potential. Vader would constantly have to keep Shigaraki from making physical contact by using the Force and manipulating his surroundings, creating a tense but exciting close-range battle. Vader fights with disciplined lightsaber mastery and precise Force techniques, while Shigaraki overwhelms opponents through relentless aggression and overwhelming power. Vader could throw debris, collapse structures, and pin Shigaraki with the Force, while Shigaraki could decay entire city blocks, forcing Vader to constantly adapt. Vader relies on his experience, armor, and mastery of the Force to survive, whereas Shigaraki can regenerate from devastating injuries, making the battle one of endurance as much as raw power. Like Vader vs. Obito before it, the two could also connect through their shared understanding of anger, pain, and suffering, making the dialogue and emotional conflict just as compelling as the physical fight.
Alts
Yeah Vader has tons, I think my current pick is Garmadon, and for Shiggy, it's definitely Kabuto.
Iron Man (MCU) vs Endeavor
Connections
Both Tony and Enji are famous heroes whose lives were once defined by obsession and ambition, believing they alone could create a better future and shoulder its burdens, and have complex rivalries with a fellow hero, who is american themed rivals (Cap and All Might). Their greatest powers lie in determination, intelligence, and perseverance, which also became the source of their greatest failures, causing immense suffering for those around them.
Their stories are ultimately not about becoming stronger heroes and more about becoming a better man. Both had their futures shaped by their pasts (Tony inherited Stark Industries and unknowingly armed terrorists, forcing him to confront the damage caused by his inventions, while Endeavor knowingly sacrificed his family's happiness in his personal obsession, and ambition to surpass All Might). Their biggest mistakes were not born from hatred, but from their fear (Tony's fear of another alien invasion led to Ultron, Sokovia, and the Avengers' split, while Endeavor's fear of never surpassing All Might pushed him to abuse his family, ultimately leading into the creation of Dabi).
Both are challenged by villains who embody the consequences of their own actions in the past (Aldrich Killian, Wanda Maximoff, Helmut Zemo, and Ultron for Tony, while Dabi is the living embodiment of Endeavor's failures as a father). Neither can erase the past, nor forget it, so they both dedicate the latter half of their lives to atonement rather than forgiveness (Tony protects others, mentors younger heroes, and eventually sacrifices himself to save the universe, while Endeavor accepts that his family owes him nothing and continues striving for atonement and becoming a better person despite the pain he caused, and knowing he might never be forgiven).
Both eventually shift from proving themselves, and shouldering their burdens, to mentoring the next generation (Tony mentoring Peter Parker, while Endeavor helps shape Shoto, Midoriya, Bakugo, and the future of Hero Society). I believe the biggest contrast between them is their awareness of their past mistakes (Tony's greatest mistakes come from ignorance and somewhat arrogance, while Endeavor understood the pain and consequences of his actions and continued anyway). Finally, both are aging heroes forced to confront the damage their obsessions and fear caused, spending the rest of their lives trying to leave the world better than they found it.
Why I like it
Endeavor is by far my favorite character in My Hero Academia. I just loooooooooooooooove redemption arcs, and what makes his so great is just how realistic it is. Endeavor knows he may never be forgiven, but he still chooses to be better regardless because it's the right thing to do. I love Endeavor's arc—he's easily a top ten character for me.
So, I wanted to find a matchup that really embodies those themes. It didn't have to be one-to-one in terms of their past actions, but it had to embody the ideas of atonement and overcoming selfishness, and Tony fits that perfectly.
And the animation potential is there. I just want to see Endeavor tear through all of Tony's armors, including the Hulkbuster, especially with his Hell Spider attack. What's great is that Iron Man 3 made it so Tony doesn't necessarily have to be there from the start. That's not a negative, because not all of his armors are equal in strength. I love the idea of Enji tearing through all of Tony's armors up to the Mark 42 (my favorite armor), before Tony himself finally joins the fight in the Mark 85, because y'know Tony ain't gonna stay out of the fight the whole time.
I do want to see Prominence Burn, but I don't know if I want that attack used on the Hulkbuster or the Mark 85, since that's his most powerful armor. I have to think about it.
I just really love this matchup, and I want to do a blog on it one day.
Alts
I know Tony has Homelander; I can’t speak on that much, though. The only one with familiarity I can speak on with Endeavor, is Ozai; I can speak about him. While I think you make it work from a storytelling perspective, Ozai is barely a character, and I don’t think anyone is craving to have him on the show.
Flame Princess vs Eclipsa Butterfly
Connections
Flame Princess and Eclipsa Butterfly are royal women who were feared, and whose worlds viewed them as dangerous evils, long before anyone bothered to really understand who they truly were.
Both were introduced through rumors, warnings, and fear from authority figures, both had their entire identities defined by others in the story, before they could define it themselves, only for the audience (us lol) to discover they were compassionate and responsible, and loving which society misjudged.
As princesses born into powerful magical bloodlines, they were feared for abilities (Flame Princess's destructive fire capable of engulfing kingdoms and Eclipsa's mastery of dark magic and forbidden spells). Both were locked away because of these reputations (Flame Princess was imprisoned by the Flame King because of PB, over what she might become, while Eclipsa was imprisoned for centuries because of what history claimed she already was), with their stories centering on breaking free from the expectations imposed by their parents and the systems they inherited.
Rather than being judged by their actions, they were judged by what they could represent (uncontrollable destruction for Flame Princess, and forbidden magic, monsters, and the collapse of Mewman tradition for Eclipsa), which arguably makes both characters critiques of prejudice by asking whether people should be judged by their heritage/what they could become; or by the choices they make.
Love also becomes a catalyst for their growth and conflict (Flame Princess's relationship with Finn and Eclipsa's love for Globgor), and both eventually rise from feared princesses to rulers entrusted with leading their people. Their biggest contrasts lie in the nature of that fear and their journeys: Flame Princess is feared for what people believe she might possibly become, whereas Eclipsa was feared for what people thought she already was; Flame Princess grows into leadership while Eclipsa reclaims the throne she was denied.
Why I like it
This matchup is quite different from other suggestions for these characters. Instead of similar abilities clashing, it's elemental powers versus dark magic, which creates a unique contrast. What really helps the matchup is the sheer destructive potential of both power sets. Furthermore, it gives Eclipsa a chance to showcase many of the dark spells from her spell book that never appeared in Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and I'd love to see how those spells would bounce off Phoebe's elemental abilities.
Alts
Flame Princess vs. Lapis Lazuli is objectively a good matchup, and despite how it may seem at first, the blog has shown that FP can actually handle Lapis' element. I wouldn't complain if it happened, it's a solid matchup. As for Eclipsa, I know she has plenty of options, but I do like Eclipsa vs. LMK Wukong. I actually think the banter potential between those two is even better than what Flame Princess vs. Eclipsa would offer.
Huey Freeman vs Numbuh 5
Connections
The connections between Huey Freeman and Numbuh 5 are that both are quiet African American kids who are highly skilled with weapons (Huey with swords and Numbuh 5 with KND technology). They both have strained relationships with their siblings (Riley and Cree), frequently clashing with them throughout their stories. Out of their respective friend groups, they're also the most strategic, level-headed, and the ones with the most common sense.
Both are child prodigies who are extremely capable hand-to-hand fighters, and fight against larger organizations/institutions (Huey opposes systemic injustice, corruption, and authoritarian figures, while Numbuh 5 battles the various adult and teen organizations that threaten kids in the KND world).
Why I like it
When it comes to African American child characters who had the biggest influence on me growing up, it's definitely these two. Even though the fight is pretty stompy, I still think it can work if the focus is on hand-to-hand combat and the various weapons and gadgets they'd normally have on a standard mission for Abby or in a typical fight for Huey. In particular, I'd love to see Abby go up against Huey's shock glove, as well as Huey's sword clashing with the candy cane sword Abby has used from time to time.
Alts
I dunno know any for either.
Donatello vs Shuri
Connections
Two teens who were raised alongside their siblings while hidden from the rest of the world. They serve as the scientists of their families of warriors. While both know how to fight, they rely more on their intelligence than their brothers do. They both specialize in long-range weapons (Bo and Spear). Both also struggle more than their brothers to embrace their spiritual side because of their strong belief in science and logic. Over time, however, they learn to reconcile the two, eventually blending their scientific minds with their spiritual beliefs.
Why I like it
I was actually intending to do a blog for this one, but real-life projects, along with my lack of support, pushed it to the back burner. I still fully intend to make it, just at a later time. Regardless, I still really like this matchup, particularly with an IDW focus, since that's the version of Donnie that meshes best with Earth-616 Shuri. I like the blend of technology and mysticism, and I also think the idea of a ninja facing off against a Wakandan warrior is just really cool.
Alts
I know Donnie has a plethora of matchup ideas, from Tim Drake, Tails, Coco, and Spider-Man. I'm not the biggest fan of any of them, but I can definitely see the appeal. Shuri, on the other hand...has Sally Acorn? Yeah, I'd honestly just stick with Donnie for her.
Iroh vs Splinter
Connections
Both are martial arts masters who serve as the wise mentors to their respective sons (Zuko (yes he is Iroh son) and the TMNT). They are legendary warriors and both have devoted themselves to teaching and helping the next generation to face tyrannical leaders who happen to be their brother (Ozai and the Shredder).
Each suffered the loss of a loved one (Lu Ten for Iroh, and Tang Shen and Miwa/Karai for Splinter), and these tragedies transformed them into compassionate mentors, and spiritual teachers, with a plethora of wisdom. Both emphasize discipline, patience, balance, and inner peace. Despite their age, both remain some of the strongest fighters in their worlds, while also being the leading figure of the redemption of their family member manipulated by the main villain (Zuko and Karai). Once they pass on, they become spiritual guidance that others can learn from.
Why I like it
This has become my favorite for both, just based on vibes alone. I think the coolest thing about it is that both are martial artists with spiritual connections, plus I think despite the fact Iroh is a firebender and Splinter is a giant rat, this could be a pretty grounded fight that focuses on skill. I don’t have much else to say, I just think this would be cool.
Alts
I still like Splinter vs. Shifu, but I prefer this matchup. I also think Iroh vs. Oogway can work; I'm just not sure how I feel about Iroh having to contend with Oogway's Chi abilities and the rest of his supernatural powers, which, frankly, Iroh can't really match.
Shrek vs Muscle Man
Connections
Both are crude, foul-mouthed, rough-around-the-edges, green protagonists who are initially viewed as disgusting and unwanted by the people around them, despite there being far more to them than first meets the eye. They both lean into their gross appearances (not just in their behavior or looks, but also in their homes) and behavior, often using them to intimidate or annoy others.
Despite this, both have kind hearts and deeply care about their friends and loved ones. Both frequently use their physical strength to solve problems, making them among the strongest members of their respective friends. Both have a best friend who is much more cheerful than they are (Donkey and Hi Five Ghost), and they both hide their insecurities behind jokes, insults, and behavior. This means that they both learn what it means to open themselves up to others, especially their wives and friends.
Both have romantic partners who accept them for who they truly are (Fiona and Starla), help them become more emotionally mature, and still lean into the idea that appearances, and behavior does not define true beauty. Both can become very protective of their families and friends, and are willing to fight anyone who threatens them.
Why I like it
I think Shrek and Muscle Man are very similar characters, at least thematically. I also like the contrast in their personalities, with Shrek being more stern and grumpy, while Muscle Man is loud, over-the-top, and much more explosive. As for the animation, I'm actually really curious how this matchup would play out. The fact that they're both incredibly strong is already a good starting point, and I could see that bouncing off each other really well. I'm also interested in how including their extended media, like comics and games, would change the matchup. Maybe I'll do a blog on it one day to get a better feel for its full potential.
Alts
I know Shrek has many, I just can’t remember the names, and MM has the Yo Mama guy, and that’s cool I guess.
Bumblebee vs Groot
Connections
The matchup can really work in two different ways. You could either use Comics Groot vs. a composite Bumblebee, with the connections being that both have alternate means of communication that are difficult for most species to understand (depending on the Transformers continuity), both serve as the kid-appeal members of their heroic teams, and both frequently form close friendships with other characters (Rocket for Groot, and Spike, Sam, Sari, Raf, and others for Bumblebee). Despite their appearances, both are often underestimated, yet they're incredibly kind, friendly, and compassionate toward those they meet.
The other approach is to focus specifically on MCU Groot vs. either Aligned or Bayverse Bumblebee, which is the version I personally prefer, especially Bayverse Bumblebee. Both are the youngest members of their respective teams (the Autobots and the Guardians of the Galaxy), and both communicate in unconventional ways that confuse people unfamiliar with them or their species (Bumblebee speaking through radio clips and Groot only saying "I am Groot"). Both also die and are later brought back (Bumblebee is killed by Scourge before being revived, while the original Groot sacrifices himself and gives rise to a new Groot). They each have complete control over their bodies, even being able to detach parts of themselves, including their heads.
Both share a father-son dynamic with the leaders of their groups (Optimus Prime and Quill/Rocket), and are usually paired with a smaller companion (Charlie, Sam, Cade, and Rocket), and serve as the kid-appeal characters that their respective studios market the most. Finally, by the end of their stories, audiences are able to understand them speaking normally for the first time (in The Last Knight and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3).
Aligned Bumblebee, surprisingly, has the same level of connections for the most part.
Why I like it
It's simple, clean, and pretty straightforward. I definitely vibe the most with a movie-focused approach. I think that's the best version of this matchup. Despite the overall quality of The Last Knight, it really helped the matchup by giving Bumblebee the ability to detach and freely control various parts of his body, including his head. Guardians 3 also solved the size difference, so at this point, there's really nothing holding the matchup back.
Alts
I dunno any alts for either tbh.
Bill Cipher vs Archie Eggman
(also copying and pasting my previous writings)
Connections
The connections between Bill and Eggman are as follows: Both originated from different dimensions, and, due to dissatisfaction with how their worlds operated, eventually conquered and destroyed their original realities, including their own families. To fill the void left behind, they traveled to another dimension with the goal of conquering it as well (Dimension 46'\ for Bill and Mobius Prime for Eggman). Both manipulated others into believing they were allies, promising them knowledge or power before ultimately revealing their true colors and betraying them (Ford and King Max).
Despite their goofy demeanors, names, and personalities, both are ruthlessly evil, using their immense powers and arsenals to commit widespread destruction, including genocide. However, despite their incredible intelligence and manipulative minds, both are also completely insane. Bill's discovery of the Nightmare Realm and the destruction of his original world led him to view existence as cruel and meaningless, embracing a form of cosmic nihilism where nothing truly mattered. Eggman, while always somewhat mad, descended further into insanity after countless defeats at the hands of Sonic.
After experiencing a reality where he conquered and destroyed his original Sonic and his family, Mobius Prime Sonic continued to overcome every scheme and near-victory Eggman achieved, leading him to believe in Chaos Theory—that fate itself intervenes to ensure Sonic always wins—instead of accepting that Sonic was simply that good. Despite their overwhelming power, both are ultimately undone by their own egos, constantly looking down on those they consider beneath them, with that arrogance and underestimation leading directly to their downfall.
Both are opposed by one central family (the Pines and the Acorns), alongside their friends and allies, command vast armies of loyal henchmen, and wield powers capable of warping reality itself in order to reshape the world—and beyond—in their own image (Weirdmageddon for Bill and Eggmanland for Eggman), both drawing upon the unpredictable forces of Weirdness and Chaos to accomplish their goals.
Why I like it
What I think is really cool about this matchup is the contrast between Chaos and Weirdness, how unpredictable both forces are, and the completely different ways Bill and Eggman use them. At its core, it's a magic vs. science matchup, with Bill's powers being inherent to himself while Eggman channels Chaos through his machines and technology. Even better, you could incorporate both of their armies and henchmen into the fight, making the whole battle feel even more chaotic and bizarre.
One thing I especially love about this matchup is how much it can play into both of their egos and intelligence.
Despite everything Eggman has accomplished which Bill would know about, he would still look down on him simply because he's a mortal human. He wouldn't take Eggman seriously at first, constantly mocking and toying with him, and ol' Egghead could use that overconfidence to his advantage, gradually pushing Bill harder and harder until he's forced to actually get serious. At that point, Bill would be furious that he's struggling against someone he considers so beneath him. Of course, Eggman's own ego could just as easily become his downfall. Having already dealt with Chaos users and god-like beings before, he could underestimate Bill as well, believing he's just another powerful entity he can outsmart, only to realize far too late that Bill is a much bigger threat than he initially gave him credit for.
We've already seen what Bill can do, and he has even more to work with thanks to The Book of Bill. Meanwhile, Archie Eggman has practically everything Game Eggman has (outside of Lost World through Frontiers), and then some. The fight potential is insane: an army battle, Chaos vs. Weirdness, and absolute reality-breaking madness. Imagine finally getting to see Time Eater in a Death Battle and having it clash with Bill. Then, for the climax, Eggman could make one last desperate gamble by activating the Super Genesis Wave, with the entire fight essentially becoming a race against time as he stalls Bill long enough for Snively to fire it. From there, you could have Bill desperately trying to resist the effects of the SGW, either succeeding or ultimately failing.
The banter would be insane, too. Bill's nonstop quips and sarcastic attitude would constantly get under Eggman's skin, reminding him of Sonic and pushing all the right buttons. At the same time, Eggman's intelligence and sheer determination would push Bill further than almost anyone ever has, absolutely infuriating him that a mere human is giving him this much trouble. Sure, Stanley, Ford, and Dipper have managed to outsmart Bill before, but Eggman wouldn't just be matching him intellectually—he'd also be matching him physically through his machines and inventions. And finally, it's Sonic vs. Gravity Falls. You already know the music potential would go unbelievably hard.
One thing that really stands out to me is how different this matchup is from most of their other options. Bill is usually pitted against other god-like reality warpers, while Archie Eggman is typically matched up with other scientific geniuses. Here, though, it's a reality-warping demon vs. a highly intelligent human scientist, and I think that contrast is what makes the matchup so appealing. Despite both being horrifically evil, they come from completely opposite ends of the spectrum, and that dynamic is just so good to me.

For Archie Eggman, I know Shockwave exists, but I actually prefer Fleetway Robotnik for Shockwave, especially with an IDW focus, that one makes more sense thematically and animation wise. For Bill, I think I’m down for Bill vs Ultima.
Knuckles vs Red
Connections
Both are hot-headed, stubborn, and quick to jump into action, who, despite their tempers, have strong hearts and are fiercely loyal to the people they care about. Both serve as the primary protectors of something incredibly important (the Master Emerald and the birds' eggs). Both dedicate their lives to defending that treasure from recurring thieves (Dr. Eggman and the pig army led by King Pig/Leonard). Both use their physical strength to solve problems head-on with brute force. Both initially come across as antisocial or difficult to get along with, but gradually become trusted members and leaders within a larger group of heroes, and even leaders. Both have speedy best friends whom frequently they butt heads with more carefree, laid-back companions (Sonic and Chuck).
Why I like it
I don't know how this could work, but doggone it, I hope it does, because it's as goofy as can be, and that's exactly why I like it. I'm definitely going to look into it more to see if it has real potential, especially if you factor in the movies.
Alts
Knuckles vs. Piccolo is a thing, I guess, but it's just kind of boring to me, especially when Piccolo vs. Macaque is right there. I also can't stand Archie Knuckles vs. Juggernaut, Knuckles' entire hax arsenal gets shut down by Juggernaut's immunity to magic, and that's just not fun. I do, however, really like Knuckles vs. Ne Zha (LMK). I think that matchup works great, especially with the contrast of Ne Zha being the speedy one like Sonic, while Knuckles fills the powerhouse role, much like Wukong. As for Red, I know he has plenty of matchup ideas, and I think they're all fun to varying degrees.
Wukong vs Wonder Woman
Connections
Both are legendary mythological heroes who have become some of the most iconic figures in their respective cultures (Chinese mythology and Greek mythology/DC). They both possess divine origins (born from stone and clay) and wield powerful weapons (the Ruyi Jingu Bang and Wonder Woman's sword, shield, and Lasso of Truth). Both are incredibly powerful warriors with immense strength, speed, durability, and centuries of combat experience, spending their lives battling monsters, demons, gods, and other supernatural threats.
Throughout their journeys, they grow beyond being simply great fighters into symbols of heroism and hope. The main contrast I can note is that Wukong begins as a rebellious trickster who has to learn humility and self-control, while Wonder Woman starts as a compassionate warrior who strives to spread peace, truth, and justice from the very beginning.
Why I like it
Can this work? Genuine question. I feel like it could, especially with all of their magical abilities, powers, and raw strength bouncing off each other. I know it's probably a stomp in Diana's favor, though I do wonder (heh) if she actually has a way around Wukong's immortality. Either way, I still think this would be a fun runback idea for both of them.

Wonder Woman vs Storm is peak…that is all.
Nicole vs Carol
Connections
Both are incredibly powerful, martial artists, hardworking mothers who will do absolutely anything for their families and children, often serving as the primary providers while balancing work and raising their children. Despite being loving mothers, both can have fiery tempers and can become terrifying when someone threatens the people they love.
They're among the strongest characters in their respective series. Both push their children to be better and become the best versions of themselves, and they both have sweet romances with their partners (Richard and Mr. Gar).
Why I like it
We need more OK K.O matchups, and this is easily my favorite idea so far. They both come from worlds with toon-like physics, and they're both incredibly powerful martial artists capable of firing energy blasts. At first glance, it might seem like a stomp, but OK K.O actually has legitimate universal arguments, and Carol's ability to copy powers could make things a lot more interesting. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she could pull off the win. As it stands, this is my favorite matchup for Nicole.
Alts
Carol doesn't really have any other notable matchup ideas, but Nicole has two that I think are worth talking about: Chi-Chi and Benson. Benson is alright, I guess. I've never really been a fan of the "Boss vs. Karen" contrast because, outside of maybe one instance, I don't think you can really call Nicole a Karen. I can see why the matchup appeals to people, but I'd much rather see Benson fight Squidward. Nicole vs. Chi-Chi, on the other hand, is one I genuinely like. It's a fun matchup, even if it's definitely a stomp.
Gumball vs Robin
Connections
I actually believe that these two have some solid connections. Both are energetic, loud, and overconfident leaders of their friend groups/siblings ( Anias and Darwin/ The Titans) and they are pretty convinced they know what's best, even when they obviously don't. They're both incredibly competitive and will go to absurd lengths to win (like in a game, argument, or simply proving themselves right), and their biggest enemy is their own ego’s, with their confidence often turning into arrogance and creating many of the problems they have to solve.
They are capable of switching between being surprisingly competent and unbelievably incompetent depending on the situation (like for example Gumball grades are terrible, but the moment Nicole gave him and instrument which gave him confidence, he stated improving in life, including academically and he actually got an A on a math test Gumball is not dumb, he just doesn't apply himself, despite his flaws when the situation calls for it Robin can be pretty creative, and he is smart, he’s the only one to get his team to work together despite they’re disfunction), which creates a lot of their comedy. Despite acting selfishly or immaturely, they do genuinely care about the people closest to them and will put themselves in danger to protect them when it truly matters.
Both come from series which thrive on expressiveness, exaggerated facial expressions, meltdowns, and emotional outbursts being a huge part of their series humor, and both exist in worlds where reality bends to the joke (cartoon logic, fourth-wall breaks, surreal events, and reality-warping gags, etc).
They can also have an unhealthy obsession with being respected and/or being taken seriously, often overreacting when they don't get the praise they think they so rightfully deserve, and both can become extremely manipulative or scheming to achieve their goals, usually making the situation much worse.
Though, at the same time, they're both capable of genuine moments of emotional maturity that shows there's something more beneath the comedy, ego, and pride. The biggest contrast is that Gumball is (relatively speaking) an ordinary kid thrown into bizarre situations, while Robin is a superhero trying to be the serious leader in an intentionally unserious superhero world.
Gumball prefers improvising his way through problems, whereas Robin prefers planning and organization (even if those plans completely fall apart),Gumball's stories revolve around family and school life, Robin's revolve around leading the Titans. Gumball is also willing to embrace how ridiculous his world is, unlike Robin, who desperately wants his friends and world to function like a serious superhero world, despite everyone around him constantly undermining that.
Why I like it
This is peak fiction, and I love it. Gumball doesn't really have any other matchup ideas that I vibe with, not even SpongeBob, to be honest. But this? This works. Their egotistical personalities, the looney worlds they come from, and the way they bounce off each other make for a really fun dynamic. I think this could be an incredibly entertaining matchup, and I hope it gets more love. I know Teen Titans Go gets a lot of hate, but c'mon, even it can be genuinely funny at times. The sheer hilarity of this matchup alone would make it worth watching.
Alts
Like I said, Gumball vs Spongebob is aight, but it's not for me.
Luke Skywalker vs The Hero of Time
Connections
This is the classic hero's tale. Both of these legendary warriors begin their journeys having lost both of their parents, and both were sent away as babies to protect them from the rising darkness during their birth (the rise of the Empire and the Hyrulean Civil War). They grow up believing they are ordinary, while dreaming of grand adventures.
Both are sent on life-changing quests by an elderly mentor (Obi-Wan and the Great Deku Tree). Along the way, they travel with a loyal companion (Han and Navi) and meet a princess with whom they share a special connection (Leia and Zelda).
During their adventures, both experience a devastating loss that forces them to leave their childish ways behind (Luke losing to Vader on Bespin, and Link accidentally leading Ganondorf to the Sacred Realm, resulting in Link being sealed away for seven years). Now older and wiser, they continue their journeys and ultimately defeat the great evil (Palpatine and Ganondorf).
They become celebrated heroes and legends (at least in the Adult Timeline for Link). However, due to unforeseen circumstances, both eventually live lives marked by regret and lamentation (Luke after Kylo Ren destroys his Jedi Order, and Link after being sent back to his childhood, preventing him from ever being recognized as the Hero of Time and leaving him to lament his unacknowledged accomplishments). In the end, both are able to pass their skills on to the next generation (Rey and the Hero of Twilight), and by guiding the heroes who came after them, they are finally able to pass on in peace.
Why I like it
This is purely Canon Star Wars, no Legends. I definitely have my issues with how Luke was handled in canon, but I still love this matchup. Seeing a lightsaber clash with the Master Sword, and all of Link's items going toe-to-toe with the Force, would be pretty cool.
Leia vs Zelda
Connections
Princesses with mystical powers who help a farm boy (or, in Link's case, a hero who is sometimes a farm boy) battle the forces of darkness. Both are deeply connected to the hero and the villain of their respective series (Leia is Luke's sister and Anakin's daughter, while Zelda, Link, and Ganondorf are bound together through the Triforce and their recurring reincarnations). They both wield mystical powers drawn from an ancient source (the Force and the Triforce, specifically the Triforce of Wisdom) and eventually fall in love with a man of much lower status who nevertheless becomes one of the greatest heroes of his world (Han Solo and Link). They are some of the most popular princesses of their respective mediums.
Why I like it
Now this one relies solely on Star Wars Legends, because Canon Leia really isn't bringing much to the table outside of the "Mary Poppins" scene. What separates this matchup from the one above is that it's structured like previous Zelda episodes, using a composite Zelda. On top of that, this is Legends, where the Force operates very differently, and Leia is significantly more powerful. She's often compared to the likes of Luke and even achieves Oneness (technically non-standard, but I'd include it because it's cool, adds to the debate, and feels fair in a composite matchup).
Alts
Outside of Peach, I can’t really speak on Zelda’s other options due to lack of familiarity to her other opponents.
Thanks for reading God Bless
Still working on Amy vs Lola
